Renegade Audit: When ZK meets MPC

Renegade audit

On February 26, 2024, Renegade tasked zkSecurity with auditing parts of its circuits and smart contracts. The specific code to review was shared via GitHub as public repositories. The audit lasted 3 weeks with 2 consultants.

We found the implementation, as well as the surrounding documentation and specifications, to be of the highest quality. The Renegade team was very responsive and helpful in answering questions and providing additional context.

Variants of KZG: Part V, Multilinear Commitments with Mercury

In this final post of the series, we extend univariate KZG commitments to multilinear polynomials through Mercury. Building on Gemini, we fold half of the variables at once, use polynomial division to bind this large fold to the original commitment and reduce the remaining multilinear evaluations to a batched inner product check. We then walk through the end-to-end opening protocol. We conclude by examining its proof size, prover cost and verifier cost.

Variants of KZG: Part IV, Multilinear Commitments with Gemini

In this blog post, we extend univariate KZG commitments to multilinear polynomials through Gemini. We introduce recursive partial evaluations, derive the split-and-fold identity and express each fold as a univariate identity that can be checked using KZG openings. We then walk through the end-to-end opening protocol. We conclude by examining its proof size, prover cost, and verifier cost.

Uncovering the Phantom Challenge Soundness Bug in Solana's ZK ElGamal Proof Program

In June 2025, we uncovered a serious soundness issue in Solana's ZK ElGamal Proof Program that could let attackers manipulate confidential token transfers undetected. We worked with the Anza team to quickly address the flaw by pausing and disabling vulnerable components. This post dives into the root cause, which was a subtle mistake in handling prover-generated challenges within sigma OR proofs, revealing broader lessons in zero-knowledge protocol security. Uncovering the Query Collision Bug in Halo2: How a Single Extra Query Breaks Soundness

We recently discovered a subtle but important soundness issue in Halo2, which we’ve named the query collision bug. It affects certain edge-case circuits and was present in widely used versions, including the main Zcash implementation and PSE’s fork. We disclosed the issue to the relevant teams, including Zcash, PSE, and Axiom, all of whom have since patched it. While no known production circuits were affected, the bug reveals a surprising vulnerability in the proving system that deserves attention.

Archetype x zkSecurity - Proof is in the Pudding: Groth16

In Session 10 of "Proof is in the Pudding," we work backward from Groth16's famously compact verifier equation to explain why the protocol is shaped the way it is. We cover how R1CS constraints become polynomial identities, why pairings are needed to multiply hidden commitments, how random linear combinations and the Schwartz-Zippel lemma enforce witness consistency, and how the separating factors gamma and delta restrict which pieces of the CRS a prover can use.
