zkSecurity took part in judging the latest zkHack Montreal

zkhack

It was our pleasure to take part in the judging of the latest zkHack competition. An annual hackathon spanning a weekend (in Montreal this time) that brings together developers, researchers, and enthusiasts to explore the latest in zero-knowledge proofs and privacy-enhancing technologies.

The results of the competition and a write up of the event can be found here.

The projects that came out of this edition showcased the versatility and potential of ZK proofs in enhancing privacy in various applications, as well as solving real-world problems, exploring insanely creative new use cases like ZK breathalyzers, ZK & GPS and many more!

We were impressed to see what hackers came up with and are looking forward to the next edition!

SoK: What don’t we know? Understanding Security Vulnerabilities in SNARKs

We've teamed up with some of the top minds in academia and industry to dive deep into the world of zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and their vulnerabilities. Our new paper catalogues hundreds of ZK vulnerabilities, breaking down their root causes and offering strategies to sidestep these pitfalls. By digging into real-life SNARK implementations, we aim to bolster the security of these cutting-edge systems with actionable insights and recommendations. Curious about what makes ZKPs tick and how to keep them secure? You might find this study just what you need!

Introducing bugs.zksecurity.xyz a knowledge base for ZK bugs

We're thrilled to introduce our new site, [bugs.zksecurity.xyz](https://bugs.zksecurity.xyz/), a hub for exploring past vulnerabilities in ZK circuits. Dive into our growing catalog of documented bugs and learn how we've reproduced some with comprehensive scripts. Discover evaluations of prominent security tools like Circomspect and Picus, and see where they shine or stumble. We're calling on the community to join us in expanding this invaluable resource, whether by adding bugs, reproducing them, or improving our platform. Let's collaborate to elevate ZK security together!

Bringing Aleo and Leo into zkao

We recently brought Leo and Aleo support to zkao, our AI-powered bug-detection tool, and put it to work on a real engagement with HumanityLink. Getting an LLM to audit a young ecosystem like Aleo turned out to be less about the model and more about what we fed it - custom prompts or skills so it actually recognizes Aleo bug patterns, a harness called cheatVM that turns findings into real end-to-end proofs of concept instead of code that just looks right, and a clear threat model that significantly cut down our false positives.

A Year of ZK Security

A year after launching, we've grown and evolved alongside the world of zero-knowledge proofs, uncovering bugs and learning the ins and outs of ZK technology. From circuit audits to developing our own tools like Circomscribe, it’s been a wild ride. We've discovered how easy it is to misstep with ZK code, especially as these systems grow complex and impact financial security. As zkVMs gain popularity, we're excited about the challenges ahead and are expanding our expertise. Want to dive into the world of ZK with us? Check out our latest projects and even take on our zkBank challenge!
